Laboratory in the University structure
In the structure of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University of Peter the Great, the laboratory belongs to the scientific division of the Institute of Metallurgy Engineering and Transport.
Retrospective
The laboratory was founded in 2014 with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation as part of the allocation of a megagrant in accordance with Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 220. In 2014, the laboratory became part of the «Lightweight and Reliable Construction» technology platform.
The research carried out in the laboratory is relevant for Russia and is adequate to the current state of world science. The stiffness of new macrostructured single-layer and multilayer materials and their products exceeds more than eleven times then stiffness of known similar materials with the same weight. They also have aerodynamic and hydrodynamic drag 30% less than materials with a smooth surface. This means that components from such materials can be relatively larger but retain energy efficiency. Heterogeneous materials for separate layers require new production methods and new models for product design, wide and in-depth research in materials science, plastic processing of materials and welding.
In addition to creating a common basis for materials, the specifics of their application must be considered. Depending on the future use of structures, comprehensive, specialized, innovative solutions should be developed and provided (for example, for vehicles such as ships and wagons, as well as for other structures).
The aim of the project is to create a laboratory of light materials and structures. The objective of the project is to develop single-layer and multi-layer light semi-finished products and components with a macrostructured surface and technologies for their production and manufacturing of reliable structures.
The laboratory staff offers new specialized materials protected by patents and methods for production of new structures for aerospace, automotive and shipbuilding industries. The laboratory also serves as a scientific and auxiliary basis for high-quality training of a new generation of engineers and young researchers in the field of technology development with great material and energy efficiency.
